In the fauna of Ukraine within the Azov-Black Sea basin, six species of fish of the Acipenseridae family (Acipenseriforme) of a number of Acipenseriformes of the class of radiant fishes (Osteichthyes).
Today in Ukraine, the Danube River has remained the main one in the northwestern part of the Black Sea, where the regular natural spawning of sturgeons has been preserved. At the same time, Ukraine divides the territorially natural areas (habitats) of these sturgeons in the Black and Azov Seas and in the Danube River with other states within which these water bodies are located. Therefore, interstate cross-border cooperation is extremely important.
IUU fishing, loss of a settlement and blocked migration routes, as well as other negative phenomena, caused a significant reduction in the number of these species. It is this issue that the research conducted by WWF in 2017 and the roundtable "National legislation on protection, breeding, trade of sturgeon fish in Ukraine and the possibility of its improvement" are intended.
